In this memoir, I explore the topic of kindness in relation to tribalism and bullying, especially the bullying of children.
The young girl, Izzy Dixs, featured in the photo selected for this podcast, committed suicide in 2013 due to bullying. My prayers go out to Izzy. Her poem “I Give Up” was published in the Daily Mail Online, and other places, after her death in 2013.
I read my poems "Cocoon Street, Anywhere, USA" and "Be You".
Emily Dickinson's poem "If I Could Stop One Heart From Breaking" can be found at www.PoemHunter.com.
I read from Rainer Maria Rilke's work The Book of Hours: Love Poems to God, translated by Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy (2005, Riverhead Books).
Naomi Shihab Nye's poem "Kindness" can be found at poets.org and her book Words Under the Words: Selected Poems. Copyright © 1995.
